MARINA
ABOUT
Marina Alison Day once lived and breathed and ate Thai food.
In Thailand, even.
If you knew her, then there’s not much to be said about why you’re here. If you didn’t know her, you will, in about ten seconds of scrolling, clicking, reading, listening, watching.
If tears well up, please do welcome them. This is no place for suppression. It’s pretty hard not to notice brittle parts of your heart softening, widening, opening, in this precious, singular moment in history, this most profound goodbye.
That’s precisely how Marina would have it
Aside from grief, you’re also likely to find here ferocious gratitude, joy, amazement, inspiration, awe, beauty, courage, generosity, kindness, silliness, music, dancing, reverence, and vast, palpable love.
These are what Marina embodied and radiated, so of course, they echo and ricochet all over these pages. Please grab some. Give it residence in the new space in your heart. Let it shimmer out into your world.
Thank you SO for being.
Here.
Music + Books
The songs in this collection are in various stages of finish. Many were raw recordings she made in her bedroom with GarageBand, to remember them until she could get into the studio and record professionally; some are from open mic nights at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia, or recordings friends made with their phones in random places. Only one, More Than We Seem, was an engineered final version.
Some songs Marina wrote from pure inspiration, some for college homework, and some were commissioned by friends wanting something special for a dance performance or other project.
At 21, Marina Day received disarming news. A daunting diagnosis left her feeling thunderstruck, and questioning her future as she battled for her life.
As luck would have it, though, her uncle Michael could relate. Having conquered a life-threatening challenge of his own, he was uniquely fit to offer guidance and support. A psychic bodybuilder with a quick, unbridled wit, he didn’t look-or act-the part that he agreed to play. And yet, to be a sounding board and ally for his niece, he made himself available for pep talks on demand and traveled to the hospital routinely during her stays. Moreover, when her fears and doubts began to escalate, he dutifully responded to her questions and concerns. Like “Why do people cling to indefensible beliefs? Why do bad things happen, and what purpose does it serve? How can people worship God and do ungodly things? What happens when we die, and can we influence our fate? And if there is a destination for departed souls, can they communicate with us in an explicit way?”
The Moon Prince and The Sea is based on the true story of a bond formed across an ocean between two children who found joy and peace despite terminal illnesses. In a hospital in India, Sumit is surrounded by children who call the hospital their home; in a hospital in America, Marina is surrounded by her loving family and friends. The book is named for Sumit, the moon prince, who paints a map of two moons that the children will later find on their adventure, and Marina, whose name means “of the sea.”
